I’d figured when I read her reply :). To answer your question, yes you would have to bleach your hair first before you can opt for a purple colour. How light you go, as in applying bleach more than once etc depends on how bright you want the purple colour to be. When bleaching, also watch out for colour tones that emerge because that will effect the achievement of your final colour.  

It wouldn’t matter if you have virgin black hair or dyed black hair because you would have to bleach it anyway. You can never dye from a darker colour to a lighter colour without bleaching it first due to hard-to-rid-of dark pigments.

I strongly recommend you go to a professional hair salon to dye it and that you opt for a dark shade of purple because bleach is very bad for your hair so try to keep a minimum process of it- this is speaking from experience and also keep in mind that the colour will fade more rapidly than traditional hair dye colours- I had blue black hair once and had to do touch ups more often than when I had a brown etc.
